Belgian Tervuren Puppies

Belgian Tervurens are intelligent and energetic, and excel when they have a job to complete. They take quickly to training as long as their instruction is firm but kind. They are affectionate with their family and expect attention from them. They are good with children under supervision and make great guard dogs.

Tervurens are healthy dogs, but should regularly have their joints checked for hip and elbow dysplasia. They should also be screened for retinal atrophy and other eye disorders at their vet checkups.

They are high energy dogs that should get at least an hour of exercise every day. In their AKC standard they are described as "always in motion, seemingly never tiring." Their exercise should involve a task as often as possible so they get mental stimulation. They love spirited playtime with their owners and make great hiking companions.

Their long, double-coat needs to be regularly groomed. During non-shedding seasons a weekly brushing will do, but during heavy shedding seasons daily brushings with a rake may be necessary. They are also susceptible to dental diseases, so their teeth and gums should be cleaned regularly.

Tervurens are heavy shedders and can be expected to shed year round. Weekly brushings can help pull loose hair from their dense coat, but you will still need to sweep or vacuum hair from your home.

The Tervuren's luscious double coat gives them a proud and regal appearance. Their coat is typically fawn colored with a black overlay. They have a long face and wide set triangular ears that stand erect. Their fur fluffs around their neck and hindquarters.

The Tervuren was first bred in the 1800s and are one of the 4 Belgian herding dogs. There was a great need for a herding/guard dog, a bill the Tervuren fit to the tee. As the breed evolved they grew into great companion dogs and owners began welcoming them into the home. Today they are still used in a working capacity and can be found in homes across the world.
