Jug Breed Guide

Learn More About Jugs

  • Temperament

The Jug is a friendly, playful, and affectionate breed that is a great choice for families with children due to its gentle nature. Given their social and energetic nature, Jugs are not dogs that can be left alone for long periods of time. If they're by themselves for too long, Jugs can become destructive out of boredom. These dogs are smart and usually easy to train, but some may inherit the stubborn nature of the Jack Russell Terrier. That said, it's important for Jug owners to set firm boundaries with their dogs during puppyhood. Otherwise, these dogs may grow up thinking that they are the pack leader, despite their small size. As long as you properly train and care for a Jug, this breed is the ultimate furry companion.

  • Health

While Jugs were bred with hopes of reducing breathing problems associated with Pugs, this breed is still likely to have trouble breathing since their muzzles are short. Because these dogs are prone to Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, owners need to pay special attention to their Jugs' breathing in cold and hot temperatures. Jugs are also known to be susceptible to eye infections, obesity, cardiomyopathy, and von Willebrand's disease.

  • Activity Level

The parent breeds of the Jug are on opposite sides of the energy spectrum, and the Jug typically falls somewhere in between. They require about a half hour of exercise per day, which can usually take the form of playtime in a fenced-in yard or a short walk.

  • Grooming

The frequency with which you'll brush your Jug depends on which coat your dog inherited. Generally, you can expect to brush your Jug around once or twice a week to keep its coat healthy and tangle-free. Baths can be given to this breed as needed. Like other dogs, Jugs should have their teeth brushed regularly and their nails trimmed every month.

  • Shedding

Although their coats are short, Jugs shed moderately all year round. Jug owners can expect to find loose fur throughout their homes. This breed is not hypoallergenic or good for allergy sufferers because of its shedding.

  • Appearance

There is some variation in each Jug, even within the same litter. Their head is generally big and round, and their muzzle ranges from the short muzzle of the pug, to the elongated muzzle of the Jack Russell. Their coat depends heavily on their Jack Russel parent and is typically smooth or rough.

  • History

The Jug is a designer dog breed that's a hybrid of the Pug and the Jack Russell Terrier. Like most hybrids and designer dogs, the Jug was created in an attempt to minimize the health issues that can be present in its purebred parents, like the Pug's breathing issues. In terms of its origins, no one knows for sure when or where the Jug was developed, but it is likely that the breed was created in the United States during the 1980s or 90s. Since then, the Jug's popularity has increased and spread to other countries across the globe. Today, the Jug is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR), and a few other small clubs for hybrids and designer dogs.
