  • Temperament

These dogs are loyal to their owners and thrive in households where they can both work and participate in family activities. Like many guardian breeds, Maremma Sheepdogs can be suspicious of strangers, so socialization is very important.

    Maremma Sheepdogs are a sturdy breed, but can be susceptible to conditions like hip/elbow dysplasia, Entropian, bloat, and patellar luxation.

  • Activity Level

    Maremma Sheepdogs are working dogs who need a lot of physical activity. These intelligent, energetic pups like activities such as jogging, hiking, and swimming, and they are known to excel in dog sports such as agility, tracking, herding, and obedience.

  • Grooming

    Their long double coats require quite a bit of maintenance, especially during heavy shedding seasons. They require regular brushing and deshedding to keep their coats healthy and free of dead hair. They were bred to be alone for extended periods of time to guard the flock, so their coat rarely requires a trim.

    Maremma Sheepdogs shed year round, and very heavily during the spring and fall. During these months regular brushing is necessary to remove loose hair.

    The Maremma Sheepdog is a strong, athletic dog with a rugged appearance. They have thick, double coats that are usually all white but can be shades of ivory or pale orange.

  • History

    The history of the Maremma Sheepdog is not entirely known, but most historians believe that they share a history with mastiffs and other ancient mountain dogs. While art of similar dogs have been identified as early as Roman times, the first Maremma Sheepdog was registered in 1898. They were once two separate breeds, the Abruzesse and the Maremma, but due to the regularity of cross breeding it was decided that they would be one breed. As they were domesticated their hunting drive has diminished and they are now known as great family dogs who are gentle with children.
