Learn More About Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

  • Temperament

Wheaten Terriers are friendly and playful, getting along well with other dogs and children. They are smart and easy to train. This energetic breed and enthusiastic greeter often jumps to lick a person's face. They have a stronger "prey drive" and do not do well with cats unless properly socialized.

  • Health

Wheatens are healthy dogs, but you should make sure your breeder has screened them for things like protein-losing nephropathy, Addison's disease, and renal dysplasia.

  • Activity Level

Because of their energetic nature, they require regular exercise. Their long coats can overheat the dog during summer, especially when being active, so take care to properly groom them.

  • Grooming

Their dense and wavy coat should be brushed daily to prevent matting and to keep the coat healthy. They will also need regular trips to the groomer, which should be started at a young age to develop good habits.

  • Shedding

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are unique in that they have a double coat, but don't shed. Despite this, they need to be brushed 5-7 times per week to prevent their coat from matting,.

  • Appearance

Wheaten Terriers can have two types of coats, the Irish coat or American coat. The Irish coat is silkier and wavier, whereas the American coat is thicker and fuller. Their coats start as red, brown, mahogany or white but slowly change color as they grow older to wheaten, black, white or darker brown.

  • History

Like many dogs, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier's early history isn't documented, but theories suggest that the dogs share ancestors with the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Irish Terrier. The Wheaten was likely used on farms in Ireland to guard property, hunt prey, and chase away pests. The Wheaten wasn't recognized as a breed until 1937, when it was granted breed status by the Irish Kennel Club. The breed came to the United States in 1946, but it took awhile for the Wheaten to gain popularity. It wasn't until the late 1950s that the breed gained more momentum, and the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in 1973. Today, the Wheaten enjoys a modest popularity and makes a wonderful family pet and companion.
