Staffords have a great patience and love of children, making them great family dogs. Their love of family makes them good family protectors but not protectors of family.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers can be prone to conditions like hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye disorders. Your breeder should check for all of these, and you should have your vet check for eye disorders and skin allergies regularly.

Staffords are energetic and require frequent activity. They don't like to be left alone outside but will enjoy running errands with you. Engage their mind with training and fun activities.

Staffies don't require much maintenance to keep their coat smooth and shiny. Brushing them once a week to pull away dead hairs keeps their coat healthy, and occasional baths will keep them looking and smelling fresh. As with all breeds, their nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid discomfort.

Their short coat sheds moderately, and will shed heavily once a year in the spring or fall. Regular brushing can help remove loose hairs, but you can expect to still find their short hairs around the house.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrer is unusually strong for a small- to medium-sized breed. They have wide legs and broad heads with a short muzzle. Their coat is short and stiff in a variety of colors including, white, black, blue, fawn, or red, all with or without white.

Unfortunately, Staffordshire Bull Terriers were bred in Staffordshire to be used in dog-fighting rings. Blood sports were outlawed in 1835, and most of the breeds used in the pits became extinct. Staffordshire Bull Terriers stood the test of time, and more than a hundred years of responsible breeding have transformed the breed into loyal and loving family companions.
