American Corgi: A Cross Between the Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis

Crossed between the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the American Corgi emulates the temperment of both breed parents. The smallest of the herding group, the small to medium-sized breed has a sturdy build and large, pointed ears. Their ability to get along well with other animals and children makes them a popular family pet.

Learn More About American Corgis

  • Temperament

Similar to many small breeds, the American Corgi can be prone to stubbornness but is generally a happy, outgoing dog. Bred for their herding abilities, these are known for pleasing their masters and generally delighting families as a central pet of choice.

  • Health

Despite being a hybrid dog, which are typically healthier, American Corgis could end up less healthy than their parents. This usually occurs when unreputable breeders breed for a "double merle" coat, which ends up in blindness, deafness, or both. Purchasing from a reputable breeder is the best way to avoid health issues, so research the breeder you are purchasing from and report any bad practices.

  • Activity Level

Despite the short stature of their legs, the American Corgi can chase a ball quicker than you might imagine! This breed requires a moderate to high amount of daily activity, which links back to their herding skill set. You should plan to entertain this high energy dog.

  • Grooming

You should comb your American Corgi on a daily basis. As with all dogs, trim their nails on a regular basis.

  • Shedding

American Corgis shed a moderate amount.

  • Appearance

Coming in a range of colors from fawn, sable, to tri-colored, the American Corgi delights children and adults alike with its comical, short legs and long, erect ears. The waddle like movement of the breed is reflective of its cheerful personality. The fluffy white undercoat often helps to distinguish the rest of the color patterns that are present.

  • History

American Corgis are a new designer mix between a Pembroke Corgi and a Cardigan Corgi, so there is not much history with the breed. You could make history with your own American Corgi!
