Learn More About Morkies

  • Temperament

Despite their small size, Morkies are full of spunk and character. They love to play and chase, and they make a great playmate for older children. Younger children, though, may be too boisterous for the Morkie since it is a tiny dog. In terms of other pets, Morkies get along well with most small animals, but owners should be careful when introducing a Morkie to a larger dog. While Morkies can get along with just about anyone, they still prefer their owners' love and attention over anyone else's. Morkies form strong bonds with their families, and some have a tendency to become attached to one person in a family over others and designate them as their pack leader. In general, the Morkie makes a wonderful, loyal companion for all.

  • Health

Morkies have fragile frames and need to be cared for delicately to avoid injury. They also need to be kept on a strict diet to avoid developing obesity. Keep them regularly groomed to prevent tangles in their long coats.

  • Activity Level

A Morkie will have a low energy level due to its size. This does not mean lethargic, because they are enthusiastic about playtime, but they don't need much exercise. A short daily walk and a few rounds of fetch should be all that your Morkie requires to be content.

  • Grooming

A Morkie is a high-maintenance dog due to its long, silky coat. They require daily brushing to prevent matting and debris accumulation. You can trim your Morkie’s coat yourself, but it might be easier to take them to a professional groomer. Pay attention to their ears and nails for dirt and clicking when they walk.

  • Shedding

The good news is, despite your Morkie’s high maintenance, they do not shed much at all. They are also considered to be hypoallergenic and a good companion for allergy sufferers.

  • Appearance

Standing only 10 inches tall, a Morkie is a very small dog. They can disappear behind their long coats, which adds to their lovable and goofy look. Their coats tend to be black, white, or tan in color.

  • History

Also known as the Morkshire Terrier, the Morkie is a lovable cross between a purebred Maltese and a purebred Yorkshire Terrier. The Morkie originated in the United States, but it's difficult to determine when, as most designer dog breeds do not have a very well-documented history. The goal of breeding the Morkie was to create a small, low-shedding companion dog. Needless to say, that goal was achieved, and the Morkie has become quite popular among dog lovers in many different countries. Over the years, there have even been canine clubs developed specifically for the Morkie, like the American Morkshire Terrier Club and the Morkshire Hybrid Registry.
