Sheepadoodle Breed Guide

Learn More About Sheepadoodles

  • Temperament

The Sheepadoodle is a gentle, affectionate dog that does well with children and makes a wonderful family pet. These dogs are at their happiest when they're involved in the family's activities, whether it's a walk in the woods or a nap on the couch. Since they enjoy being around their family so much, Sheepadoodles are not a breed that can be left by themselves for long periods of time. Like their Poodle parent, Sheepadoodles are intelligent dogs that are not difficult to train. Their obedience and love to please make them a good choice for novice dog owners. Overall, the Sheepadoodle's friendly, easygoing nature makes them a delightful companion for families, couples, and singles alike.

  • Health

Sheepadoodles are very healthy dogs with a lifespan of 12-15 years. They can be susceptible to bloat, hip dysplasia, and hypothyroidism.

  • Activity Level

Both parent breeds were bred to be athletic working dogs, so you can expect your Sheepadoodle to be active. They do best if they get at least an hour of exercise every day, which can come in the form of long walks, playtime, or games like fetch.

  • Grooming

Sheepadoodles are low-shedding but need to be groomed regularly to keep their coat healthy. If they inherit the Sheep Dog's coat they will require daily grooming to prevent tangling and heavier shedding. If your puppy inherits the Poodle coat it will require more regular baths and clippings but will shed less.

  • Shedding

Despite their long coat, Sheepadoodles are light shedders, a trait they inherit from their Poodle parent.

  • Appearance

The Sheepadoodle look heavily depends on traits inherited from parent breeds, but you can expect your puppy to be medium-large with an athletic build. Their coat can either be straight like a Sheepdog, curly like a Poodle, or somewhere in between. Their coat is most commonly white, gray, black, red, or brown.

  • History

The Sheepadoodle is a fluffy, lovable hybrid of the Old English Sheepdog and the Standard Poodle. These designer dogs were likely among the variety of breeds to develop during the "designer dog craze" that happened in the United States during the 1980s and 90s. During this time, many purebred dogs were crossed with Poodles in an attempt to create a dog that inherited the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. This is how the Sheepadoodle was developed, along with many other "Doodle" breeds. As a designer dog, the Sheepadoodle isn't eligible for American Kennel Club (AKC) registration, but the breed is recognized by the Dog Registry of America (DRA), the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), and the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR).
