Learn More About West Highland White Terriers

  • Temperament

West Highland White Terriers are alert, energetic, and playful dogs with a happy disposition. They are friendly and can get along with just about everyone, including strangers and children. Around other dogs, however, it's possible for a Westie to become aggressive. While they love people, Westies are not lap dogs. They enjoy being on the move and can become destructive if not given enough exercise. These dogs are fairly easy to train, but their terrier nature can cause them to be a bit stubborn. With consistent training, though, Westies are easy to please and quick to learn. Most of the time, West Highland White Terriers are happy-go-lucky, fun-loving family companions.

  • Health

West Highland White Terriers are healthy but can suffer from conditions like like cardiac disease and patellar luxation. Their ears sometimes trap in moisture and dirt, and should be cleaned regularly.

  • Activity Level

They are a very energetic breed that are seemingly tireless, and should receive an hour of excercise per day. They will never say no to a walk, and love playtime in the yard with their family. Any excercise that engages them mentally is encouraged as often as possible.

  • Grooming

West Highland White Terriers shed lightly, but their coat requries regular grooming. The hair around their feet, ears, and eyes should be trimmed regularly, and their coat shouuld be stripped of loose hair. Many owners have their Westie professionally groomed a few times a year.

  • Shedding

Unlike most double-coat breeds, Westies do not blow their coat seasonally. They will shed lightly year round, but regular brushing and trimming will minimize the hair you find in your home.

  • Appearance

Westies are an adorable small breed with a thick, snow white double coat and button nose. They are slightly longer than they are tall, and their dark eyes and nose are a beautiful contrast to their white coat. Underneath their beautiful coat is a sturdy frame built for hunting small prey.

  • History

The West Highland White Terrier shares its roots with the other terriers of Scotland, including the Skye, Cairn, and Scottish Terriers, all used for hunting small game. At one point, these terriers were all considered one breed, but developed into distinct breeds as a result of selective breeding. While the Westie had been around for centuries prior, it didn't really gain attention until 1907 under the name Poltalloch Terrier. Over the years, the breed has gone by several different names. In fact, it was actually registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as the Roseneath Terrier in 1908, but its name was changed to West Highland White Terrier in 1909. Since then, the Westie has become one of the most popular terriers in America.
