The Devoted and Obedient Cesky Terrier

More subdued than most terriers, the Cesky Terrier is a mix between the Scottish and Sealyham Terriers. Tasked with hunting vermin, this is one breed that will remain devoted and obedient to their family. Amicable with both children and other animals, this medium sized dog has the advantage of having a soft, trimmable coat.

Learn More About Cesky Terriers

  • Temperament

Intelligence, tolerance for animals and innate calmness render this breed an excellent candidate for therapy work. In fact, with early training and dedication the Cesky Terrier can excel in agility trials and other tracking activities. Productive and peppy are two words that sum up this dog in a nutshell.

  • Health

Cesky Terriers are know to be at risk of patellar luxation (slipped stifles), cardiac problems, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts.

  • Activity Level

With needs typical of any terrier, you should plan to spend an hour or more per day exercising your Cesky. This is an ideal running or hiking partner for those who are so inclined! You can also expect destructive behavior in the event this breed does not spend enough time exerting itself outdoors or through other activities.

  • Grooming

You should clip the coat of your Cesky regularly, unlike other terriers where you hand strip their coats. Visiting a professional groomer will ensure your Cesky is groomed properly. Their coat doesn't shed dirt well, so you'll want to bathe them regularly. Their ears can also build up with fur and dirt, so they should be cleaned during grooming sessions.

  • Shedding

A Cesky's coat doesn't shed much, making them a hypoallergetic breed.

  • Appearance

Slightly wavy hair that sweeps the paws and hang slightly over the eyes is typical of the Cesky Terrier. Two major color combinations are seen, with blue-gray and coffee both appearing more dark at birth. Their beards landscape black or liver colored noses, with a wedge shaped head.

  • History

The Cesky's ancestors date back to the 14th century, when Bohemian King Charles IV bred them in his grand kennel. It wasn't until World War II when the breed was refined, however. Czech breeder, sportsman, and geneticist Frantisek Horak developed the Cesky Terrier as a terrier who could kill rats but also work like hounds when hunting bigger game.
